A package substation is a compact, pre-assembled 11kV electrical distribution unit. It combines a high-voltage transformer, high-voltage switchgear (such as a Ring Main Unit), and low-voltage distribution cabinets into a single, coordinated structural package. Because these units are fully assembled and routine tested in the factory prior to transport, they bypass extensive on-site mechanical fit-outs. Consequently, this minimizes civil engineering costs, slashes the risk of component mismatches, and dramatically accelerates the grid connection timeline on-site.
Stock units leave us in around two weeks, and our fastest completed build went out in four days. For comparison, the standard route through separate suppliers runs 16–24 weeks for the substation on its own. Where a full package is needed, the pre-cast concrete base becomes the longest single item at three to four weeks, so that is the date we plan the programme around. Yes — transformer, ring main unit, LV cabinet, GRP housing and pre-cast base all come from us on one order, one programme and one invoice. The substation and its housing travel on the same lorry, so there is no lining up of separate delivery dates between three suppliers, and no risk of a housing arriving on a site with nothing to put in it.
Line by line, not always — a specialist selling one component in isolation can sometimes beat us on that component. What we remove is everything around it: separate assembly and delivery charges on each item, three sets of lead times to reconcile, and the weeks of programme risk that come from coordinating suppliers who have no contract with each other. On a project where the connection date carries a cost, that is usually where the money actually sits.
